The Ballymaloe Country Relish National ladies League in conjunction with Equestrian Silver .com

The Ballymaloe Country Relish National Ladies 1.10m league, in conjunction with Equestrian Silver.com has continued to grow in popularity during 2010 thanks in no small part to a huge increase in prize money, making it one of the most lucrative show jumping leagues in the country.
A massive €15,000 has been up for grabs including €2,000 at each of the four regional ‘’Silver Lady Challenge Finals’’, as well as Ballymaloe hampers and equestrian jewelry  courtesy of Aidan McGoldrick of Equestrian Silver
Ballina ran the first of the four finals in July and the lion’s share of the prize money went to Co Cork as Madeleine Robert Allen from Bandon on the ever reliable ‘’Pleasant Cherry Blaze’’ won the class ahead of the second placed combination Ita Mc Dermott from Roscommon riding her own ‘’Emoe Bailey’’
The second regional final ran at South County Dublin Show on August 1st  where local lady Avril Perrin from Kildare (pictured)  with the 13 year old bay gelding ‘’Shadow Rock’’ won the class .08 of a second ahead of Cavan winners Madeleine Roberts Allen and the ‘’Pleasant Cherry Blaze’’.
Competitors from all over the country will descend on Cavan this weekend (28-29 Aug) with another qualifier on Saturday  ahead of the Northern Silver Lady Challenge final on Sunday.
Just one further Munster region qualifier remains at Banteer Gymkhana Co Cork on September 5th, before the last of the four regional ‘’Silver Lady Challenge Finals’’ takes place at Cork /Kerry Show on September 12th
This league has now become a major player on the national circuit thanks to the continued support of sponsors, Ballymaloe Country Relish and Equestrian Silver.com.

EDDIE MOLONEY CROWNED 2010 SHOWJUMPINGIRELAND NATIONAL CHAMPION

GER O NEILL IS IRELAND’S NEW SPEED CHAMPION
TIPP'S GREG BRODERICK LANDS A DOUBLE, CLAIMING THE 5 & 7 YEAR OLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
With the Failte Ireland Dublin Horse Show out of the way, the equestrian focus moved to the ShowjumpingIreland National Championships, held at Coilog Equestrian Centre near Naas, which began on Wednesday last and concluded yesterday (Sunday), with a host of new National Champions being crowned.
Kilkenny's Eddie Moloney was crowned ShowjumpingIreland National Champion for 2010 after a series of top class performances over the five day fixture with his own ‘’Slieveanorra’’.
The concluding Grand Prix was a tough affair that yielded just two clears from the thirty three that started. Ten then went forward to the second round as per the conditions of the class with Eddie Moloney and Nicola Fitzgibbon being the only two clears from the first round.
At the start of the class, Alexander Butler was in pole position with John Higgins's Keeford Topcat however, they faulted twice to knock them out of contention.
Clears in the second round then came from Greg Broderick and Mrs Quinn which was closely followed by Dermott Lennon and Vampire, however it was too little too late as the final combinations entered the arena.
Edward Little appeared set to be one of the main contenders for the crown when recording a clear round and ensured him of at least 164.5 points to leave him in the top spot and added the pressure to the final combinations. Of those Joan Greene added to the clears putting her into third place.
It all then came down to the final combinations Nicola Fitzgibbon and Eddie Moloney. Although the National Championship crown was out of sight for Fitzgibbon, the €20,000 on offer for the Grand Prix was still up for grabs. The outgoing National champions did not disappoint when producing another fine double clear to put them into the lead.
Despite the growing pressure, Moloney kept his cool and his clear round with ‘’Slieveanorra’’ gave them the points needed to put them into the top position and crowned them National Champions for 2010.
Following the class, Moloney commented ''The horse was fantastic, he just keeps answering every question. One like him makes my job so much easier, it is a pleasure to have the chance to ride one like him. This means everything to me. He is only eight so it probably didn't look likely at the start of the week but I am absolutely delighted.''

GER O'NEILL CROWNED SPEED CHAMPION
Meanwhile Kilkenny’s Ger O Neill was crowned National Speed Champion after winning an extremely fast class with Vincent Digby's I Caeser.
A multiple winner on the National and Regional Grand Prix circuits, O'Neill currently leads the Munster Grand Prix League, and won Sunday's prestigious Final breaking the beam in a time of 60.27.
Following the class, O'Neill commented; ''It is great for the horse, he has won several speed classes this year and it is fantastic for him to be a National Speed Champion. I will be aiming him now at the remainder of the Munster Grand Prix league before moving onto the Autumn Grand Prix League.''
''It is fantastic to be a National Champion in any category but to be a National Speed Champion is great’’.
DOUBLE OF WINS FOR TIPP'S GREG BRODERICK
Meanwhile Tipperary Show jumpers continued their amazing recent run of form at the weekend with Thurles born Greg Broderick collecting two National titles at the ShowjumpingIreland Championships, held at Coilog Equestrian Centre near Naas in Co Kildare.
He began by winning the five year old championship with ‘’ Cappaneleigh Cruise’’ finishing over two seconds ahead of Waterford’s Tholm Keane.
Broderick went on to claim his second National Championship title later on Sunday evening winning the 7 Year Old National Championship with Ballypatrick Mystique, indeed they were the  only double clear round in a strong championship decider, which featured several combinations who represented Ireland at last year's World Breeders Championships in Lanaken.
The pair were last to go and produced a foot perfect effort to claim the title ahead of the Minister for Defences ‘’Drumiller Lough’’ who had a pole on the floor in the jump off. Tinarana Stud's stallion ‘’Tinarana Inspector’’  finished third with Polish rider Sebastian Bak.
Following the class, Greg Broderick commented; ''I am delighted with the mare, she jumped fantastic. She was also a National Champion as five year old so it is great to win it again. We have her since she was a three year old and we have high hopes for her on the Grand Prix circuit next year’

Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show gets underway today (Wednesday).

Ireland’s biggest annual Equestrian event, The Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show gets underway today Wednesday (August 4th) at the famous RDS arena in Ballsbridge.
Now in its 137th year the show will feature representatives from all over Ireland and the world, with a total prize fund in excess of €920,000.
With 15 international jumping competitions, 30 national jumping competitions and 95 showing classes, the Horse Show has become a Dublin institution and one of the world's biggest show jumping events.
The action gets underway with the six year old horse class sponsored by Horse Sport Ireland, with the main international competition of the day, the Irish Sports Council Classic, following this afternoon.
The Knight Frank Power & Speed follows tomorrow (Thursday) which is also Blossom Hill Ladies Day.
Without doubt the highlight of the week will be Friday’s Meydan FEI Nations’ Cup for the Aga Khan Trophy, where the top ten teams in the world will battle it out in what is the final round of the 2010 series.
The bottom four of the ten teams will be relegated to the second division after Friday's competition, but the Irish team who lie in fifth place overall look safe following their win at Aachen last month, however Team Ireland Equestrian manager Robert Splaine would no doubt love to add an Aga Khan win to his CV and the Cork man has named the strongest team possible for Friday’s decider.
Tipperary duo Denis Lynch and Shane Breen are selected having formed the backbone of the team during the season thus far.  They are joined by former world champion Dermott Lennon, Cork’s Billy Twomey and Cian O Connor in what looks on paper, to be an Irish team capable of winning the famous trophy for the first time since 2004.
Saturday’s action at the RDS  will feature  the Land Rover Puissance over the big red wall with the Longines International Grand Prix rounding off the action on Sunday.

MUNSTER RIDERS FILL TOP FOUR PLACES AT BANNOW & RATHANGAN - AS

PAUL O'SHEA MOVES FURTHER AHEAD ON TRM NATIONAL LEAGUE

Paul O’Shea moved further clear at the top of the TRM National Grand Prix League following a win in Bannow & Rathangan this afternoon (Thursday) riding Day Dream St Ghyvan Z.
O’Shea has now recorded seven wins on the National circuit since returning from the Sunshine Tour at the end of April.  The Limerick man has taken the top spot twice in the ShowjumpingIreland Premier Series and today’s win brings his tally to four in the TRM National Grand Prix League for which he now holds a lead of 6 points with five legs remaining.
O’Shea was the best of 5 through to the jump off from the 21 starters.  Last in with Paul Clarke & Michael Walsh’s Darco mare, O’Shea recorded a time of 38.04 to snatch the victory from the hands of Tholm Keane.
Although O’Shea will be missing the final two legs, when he moves to America, of the league, he still holds a strong hand in this league and in the Premier Series: ‘’I’m very happy with that performance.  I feel really lucky to have a horse like her.  She’s always in the reckoning.  The horse that was third (Castlefield Eclipse) is potentially very good.  That was only her second Grand Prix, she finished fourth in Charleville and third today so I’m delighted with the result.’’
Keane, who moved into the lead with Ronan Tynan’s Walterstown Clover, did not stay in that position for long having recorded a time of 39.26 to finish in second.  The Waterford native who has just returned from International duty in Scandinavia, where he was part of the winning Nations Cup team in Finland, remains in third place behind O’Shea and his old adversary Francis Connors.
Paul O’Shea also took third with Jocelyn Fasana’s Castlefield Eclipse and was full of praise for the OBOS Quality Mare.  They recorded the last double clear of the contest in a time of 45.32.
Reigning Champion, Francis Connors who is now aiming for a 12th National Grand Prix Title took fourth with Hugh Fitzpatrick’s Erne Brigade.  Connors recently took a win the Westwind’s Cirracruise at the end of June at the Charleville Horse.  They were fastest of the four faults in the second round with a fence down in 40.22.
Taking fifth was Anne Marie Fitzpatrick with Harry Fitzpatrick’s Finders Keepers 2.  The Corleone gelding has been in the line up on several occasions in the TRM National League this year and the pair are again in the rosettes today with 7 faults in 48.61.
Wexford Young Rider Sarah Clear picked up the Pegus Horse Feeds rug for finishing 8th and was the leading Young Rider of the class.
Possibly the most unlucky combination of the day was Mark O’Sullivan with Michael Monaghan’s Amigo when they picked up a single time fault in the first round but were good enough for 6th place at the finish.
The TRM National Grand Prix League continues on the 17th and 18th July in Limerick & District and Newcastle West.

PAUL O SHEA WINS CO LOUTH OPENING LEG OF SHOWJUMPINGIRELAND PREMIERE SERIES

THREE MUNSTER RIDERS IN TOP SIX

Full of confidence following his win of the final round of HSI Chippison Spring Tour Grand Prix Coilog last Sunday, Limerick native Paul O' Shea, (pictured)   travelled from his base in Dublin today(Sunday), with Michael Hayden's nine-year-old Belgian bred Primo De Revel to lead the field in the €12,000 Horsewear sponsored first round of the 2010 ShowjumpingIreland Premiere Series

Using his last to go advantage, O’ Shea, delivered one of only two double clear rounds of the class, and clocked the winning time of 42.56.
Speaking afterwards, the winner commented:  “The horse jumped really well and it was a great course.  Michael Hayden bought the horse through Trevor Coyle as a six-year old and he has shown a lot of potential. I had this horse on the Sunshine Tour and he went really well, but my plan was to always aim him at the Premier Series. I just really went for it today and I thought even if I had one down, if I was fast enough I could still take second place”.

Meath rider, Alexander Butler looked up for the challenge and set the target when delivering the first double clear with Harold McGahern’s Will Wimble. The pairings time of 43.95 only proved good enough for the runner-up spot as last in Paul O’Shea shaved fractions off his earlier target. Similar to O’ Shea, Butler has demonstrated good form on the international circuit of late, clocking up a series of placing’s in Villeneuve-Lobet before returning home to take the honours in the HSI Chippison in Barnadown last month.
A multiple winner on the circuit last year, Tipperary's Trevor Breen on board Karen Swann’s Adventure De Kannan was up on time in 41.31 but had one fence on the floor for third, while Joan Greene and Tim O'Shea’s Biscaya D'Eversem accounted for fourth place when the combination crossed the line also on four faults, in a time of 42.78.
Mervyn Clarke riding his mother Pauline’s Big Boy slotted into fifth place, while current HSI Chippison League winner, John Floody claimed sixth with Michael Smith’s Larkhill Cruiser.

MUNSTER PAIR HELP IRELAND WIN FONTAINEBLEAU NATIONS' CUP

AN IRISH pony team making their debut at Nations' Cup level this evening (Saturday) took Gold at Fontainebleau, beating Germany, France and Sweden into equal second place.

Fourteen year-olds Tom Foley from Clare and 'Dibidoe', and Paraic Kenny from Wexford with the Irish-bred 'Cappagh Romeo' both jumped double clears in the competition, with Paraic's 16 year-old brother Shane delivering a vital clear in the second round with another Irish-bred, 'More Clover' to help give Ireland the gold medal.

Fourteen year-old Jeremy Sweetnam from Bandon in Co. Cork was unfortunately eliminated in the first round with the Irish-bred 'Alhies Fir Baoi', and collected ten faults second time out.

Ian Fearon, Horse Sport Ireland's High Performance Coach for Ponies and Children on Horses, said afterwards: "This was an outstanding win. The four riders were making their debut in a Nations' Cup, but they really stepped up to the mark. We were lying second at the halfway mark, and they delivered three straight clears to win Ireland the trophy. There were seven strong teams here today, but the lads produced the form when it was needed."

The Irish pony riders had collected five individual wins in the first two days of Fontainebleau, and had also dominated most classes with a large number of top ten places.

FOLEY WINS FRENCH GRAND PRIX

SWEETNAM FINISHES 9TH

CLARE'S Tom Foley added to his Fontainebleau laurels this afternoon (Sunday) with a win in the CSIOP Grand Prix with 'Dibidoe', the same pony who had delivered a double clear round for the 14 year-old on Saturday to help Ireland win the French Nations' Cup.

A fast double clear from Foley pipped French challenger Francois Denis by just over four seconds in the jump-off, while Kate McDonagh and the Irish-bred 'Bertas Clover' slotted into fourth.

Tim McDonagh was best of the Irish in the CSIP Grand Prix, delivering a third place on the Irish-bred 'Carrenhill Clover', while Cormac Hanley arrived in fifth place with another Irish-bred, 'European Clover'.

Tim's sister Kate won the Six Year-Old Grand Prix with 'Some Boy', and Matt Garrigan made it a double when he won the Seven Year-Old Grand Prix on 'Dr. Spot'.

CORK’S BLAYNE SHEEHAN TAKES HSI CHIPPISON GRAND PRIX WIN ON HOME SOIL

Castletownbere's Blayne Sheehan ensured onlookers at Mayville stables in Carrigaline Co Cork had a local win to celebrate today, (Sunday) as  the Young Rider scored a convincing win in the latest round of the Horse Sport Ireland Chippison Grand Prix.

Riding his father Edward Sheehan’s seven year-old Irish-bred chestnut gelding 'Rathglass Dexter', Blayne was one of 13 riders who made it through to the jump off from the original start list of forty one.

Runner-up spot in the jump-off went to Sinead Kennedy from Tralee Co Kerry on William Kennedy' 'KEC Alicante', while third place went to another Young Rider, Kilkenny’s Vincent Byrne on James Weldon's 'Jays Lad'.

Horse Sport Ireland's Junior / Young Rider Show Jumping High Performance Manager John Ledingham said: "It's great to see so many Young Riders out today, and doing so well, with a total of  three in the top six in the jump-off at Maryville this afternoon."
Previously known as the Guidam Spring Tour’, the 2010 HSI Chippison Spring Tour has seen new sponsors John and Marie Burke coming on board with Horse Sport Ireland and the Showjumpers Club. Thoroughbred Remedies, Darragh Equestrian Solutions, Comfort Zone, Jaguar Saddles and Showjumping Ireland, with the final leg taking place in Coilog Equestrian Centre Co. Kildare, on the 18th of April.
Speaking about the HSI Chippison Spring Tour, Horse Sport Ireland Chairman, Joe Walsh, said: “We are delighted to be involved in the Spring Tour again this year. It is a great initiative from the Showjumper’s Club, and we welcome new sponsors John & Marie Burke on board for 2010.”
SECOND WIN FOR FLOODY IN ARMAGH
On a day that saw a double header of rounds of the HSI Chippison Spring Tour, John Floody yesterday added to his points tally when winning at Kernan's Equestrian Centre in Co. Armagh on Jim Monks's 13 year-old grey gelding 'Ashbourne'.

Moving up five from his sixth-place finish on Wednesday at Broadmeadows, 'Ashbourne' repeated his third leg Rolestown victory, achieved earlier this month. The Slane, Co. Meath rider also slotted the Irish-bred 'Larkhill Cruiser' into third, and said afterwards: " I'm absolutely delighted with both horses. This is 'Ashbourne's' second win in the tour, but it's only second time out for 'Larkhill Cruiser' who is an eight year-old, and I'm really pleased with the third-placed finish."

Runner-up spot at the Crossmaglen venue was claimed by 17 year-old Conor Drain from Co. Antrim, riding his mother Geraldine's 'Fine Filly', finishing on a double clear, but half a second off the pace of the more experienced Floody.

SHOW JUMPING - CIAN  O'CONNOR WINS FOURTH LEG OF HSI CHIPPISON GRAND PRIX TOUR WITH WATERFORD'S

PADDY O DONNELL RUNNER UP

CIAN O'Connor chalked up his second win of the HSI Chippison Spring Tour when he powered the 13 year-old gelding 'Complete' across the line at Kill International Equestrian Centre in this evening's (Sunday) Grand Prix with almost two seconds in hand over runner-up Paddy O'Donnell from Fenor Co Waterford and the Irish-bred 'HarristownPrincess'.

'' I am delighted with how Harristown Princess jumped today, this was our first big competition of the season against good quality oposition'' said O' Donnell afterwards.

Four Irish-breds finished in the top six at the Kildare venue from a substantial starting field of 72, and 21 combinations made it through to the jump-off, but Meath-based O'Connor showed a turn of speed that none could equal and gave 'Complete' another rosette to join the one won at Cavan two weeks ago.

Finishing third at Kill were Gerard O'Neill and Jane O'Flynn's Irish-bred 'Kinnagrelly', improving one place since their outing at Rolestown Grand Prix last Sunday.

The next leg of the HSI Chippison Spring Tour takes place at Broadmeadows Equestrian Centre in Co. Meath next Wednesday.

HORSE SPORT IRELAND CHAIRMAN WELCOMES SURVIVAL OF EQUITATION SCHOOL AFTER CUTS

HORSE Sport Ireland Chairman Joe Walsh today (Thursday) welcomed the news that Dublin's famous Army Equitation School will not be closed as part of the government's current spending cutbacks.

He said this afternoon: "I am very pleased with the news. The Army Equitation School is world famous, and I think it is an enlightened step by the government and in particular Defence Minister Willie O'Dea to maintain this long and distinguished tradition."

In a statement this morning, Minister O'Dea said: "While some cost reducing measures proposed in the McCarthy Report will be introduced, I have decided not to accept the suggestion that the Army Equitation School be closed."

"It is an important and emblematic feature of the Defence Forces and I believe it should continue its good work representing the Defence Forces and Ireland."

SHOWJUMPINGIRELAND/BOTANICA AUTUMN GRAND PRIX LEAGUE

TIPP’S TREVOR BREEN FINISHES RUNNER UP AS CONOR SWAIL LANDS AUTUMN LEAGUE TITLE

Trevor Breen had to settle for runner up position in the ShowjumpingIreland/Botanica Autumn Grand Prix League after Conor Swail grabbed all ten points in the final round at Kildare International Equestrian Centre on Sunday last.

Heading into the final leg Breen held an eight point lead and knew a top six placing at Kildare would see him at the Autumn league title to the National Championship he won in 2008. Things seemed to be going according to plan for the Cashel rider as he was heading for a clear round with ‘’Adventure De Kannan’’ before lowering the last fence. This proved costly as their time wasn’t fast enough to finish as one of the fastest 4 faulter’s, leaving them outside the points on this occasion.

Along with  valuable league points, 3,000 euro was up for grabs on Sunday thanks to sponsors ‘’Soho Boutique’’ where a devastating performance from Malahide based Conor Swail saw him take three of the top six places, with ‘’Carra Touche’’ delivering the all important win for Swail. At just an eight year old this Touchdown sired stallion looks to have a bright future for owner Norman Allen. Just three combinations managed to jump clear in the first round and Swail provided two of those with ‘’Music Hill Cruise’’ having one fence down against the clock, a round good enough to see them finish in second place. John Floody and Ashbourne picked up sixteen faults in the jump off but as the only other first round clear this was still good enough to take third place.

Conor Swail’s final total of 48 points sees him crowned Autumn League champion for 2009, just two points ahead of Trevor Breen, while Limerick’s Paul O Shea finished in third place overall.

ShowjumpingIreland/Botanica  Autumn Grand Prix league at Kill International Allianz arena

Co Waterford’s Paddy O Donnell claimed the penultimate round of the ShowjumpingIreland / Botanica, Autumn Grand Prix League, at Kill International Equestrian Centre in Co Kildare today(Sunday).
Thirty two horses and riders went to post in a competition featuring a 3,000 euro prize purse courtesy of sponsors ‘’Allianz’
Ten combinations made it into the jump off and just four of these managed to jump clear in the second round. League leader Tipperary’s Trevor Breen had one fence down against the clock with the consistent ‘Adventure De Kannan’ to finish in fifth overall. Breen now has an eight point advantage over Conor Swail at the top of the table and a fifth place finish or better in next weeks final round at Kill International, will see the Cashel native crowned 2009 Autumn League Champion.
Limerick’s Paul O Shea has been a regular amongst the prizes in this series and a steady second round clear in 45.07 seconds aboard Ronnie Hollinger’s Camiro De Harr secured fourth place for O’ Shea.
Kilkenny’s Eddie Moloney (Chatsworth Dan) and John Floody (Larkhill Cruiser)  were separated by less than half a second in the finish, with Floody securing second spot ahead of Moloney in third.
But the only rider to break the 33 second barrier in a fault free performance was Waterford’s Paddy O Donnell. The Uluru Bar sponsored rider from Fenor near Tramore, piloted Tomas Power’s super mare Harristown Princess to a deserved victory to add to their Piltown Grand Prix win in 2008.
‘’ I am really delighted to win at Kill here today; it was a big class with plenty of top riders. Eddie Moloney and John Floody were particularly fast and I’m just thrilled with how the mare jumped for me’’

BOTANICA / SHOWJUMPINGIRELAND AUTUMN GRAND PRIX LEAGUE - CAVAN

Munster pair Trevor Breen and Paul O Shea seem to have set the Botanica/ ShowjumpingIreland Autumn Grand Prix League as their perfect end to the 2009 season , with both riders travelling to Cavan this weekend in search of valuable league points.

Cashel's Trevor Breen who has already won a round of the series heads the table with 14 points, but is closely followed by Limericks Paul O Shea who is just one point behind on 13.
