Panda League Summer Showjumping Finals

For the second time in as many weeks summer showjumping at The Ballyrafter Centre, Lismore had fantastic competitions and the Panda League Finals last week were an exciting mix of family clashes, sheer drama and super fun. Edmond Fennell, Dungarvan with the aptly named Irish Draught gelding “Dan the Man” like his human namesake had a spectacular week winning the fantastic 90cms final and taking the overall leading horse award of the league for good measure. In fact the Fennell/Ahearne families jumped superbly to win three of the five finals.

Their winning streak started in the 80cms final. Eleven horses in the jump-off made it a proper battle right from the outset. Leonie Barry, Kilworth with Miss Ellie despite their inexperience jumped like professionals and stopped on 39.82 looking the likely winners. Then Audrey Furney, Watergrasshill and Emerald found a few tight turns and with a flying leap over the last went ahead in 39.47. Drawn last as the 80cms league leaders Aoife Fennell, Dungarvan and Killineen Woody kept their consistent performances and to great cheers claimed the winning trophy as well in 38.72. In the following 90cms final there was more brilliant excitement. Mairead Barry, Castlelyons produced her own Woodville Hall to take the lead with an early clear and then Emma Dwane, Dungarvan on Gina O’Brien’s mare Gloria flew ahead after a super round in 41.37. After a few were quick but unlucky to touch a pole the last to go Edmond Fennell and the chestnut Dan the Man had it all to do just like in the match the previous Saturday. A spectacular moment rounding the last bend when horse and rider were nearly going different directions did not deter them and jumping as clean as a whistle they stopped in 39.65 for another hugely popular win.

Heather Ahearne, Dungarvan Edmond’s niece with John Fennell’s Comeragh Birdie had a perfect round in the amazing time of 36.02 to take the honours in the 1-00m final doing so ahead of her cousin Lawrence Fennell with Jepetto. Linda Hayes, Tallow filled third place with her lovely bay mare Cassiel. The 70cms final went to Princess owned by Paddy Meaney, Cappoquin and ridden by Anna Dangerfield, Ballyduff when they were pathfinders in 41.56. Sarah O’Connell, Cork was second with Prince in 42.16 and Bernadette O’Donoghue, Mitchelstown on her coloured gelding Steam took third in the final and the leading horse award. The 1-10m came down to a clash between the event riders Eric O’Driscoll, Ballymacoda and Knockadoon Clover and Ian Hannon, Tallow with Old Road Edward but it was Eric who came out on top after the last fence fell to deny Ian another great result having been second at Grove One Day Event the previous Sunday.

Friday evening was the turn of the ponies for their Panda League Final with lots of new young riders forward, having their first taste of competition. The 50cms class for first time newcomers is a revelation, these youngsters just improve week by week during the qualifiers and the final was top class. Alannah Budds, Killeagh has been knocking on the door with Gleann na gCapall Dancer and her first win came on Friday when she was fractions quicker than Taylor Long, Midleton with Coco. Kate Lenihan, Bonmahon in her first final took third. The tables were turned though in the 60cms final when it was Taylor who won ahead of Alannah and Eibhlin Mangan, Midleton was third here with her leading pony Steptoe. The six ponies through to the jump-off of the 70cms final were all clear against the clock with Ali Flynn, Lismore on the 12 hands Monty’s Lane set a great time of 48.37. Kobee Fawkes, Cappoquin on her new ride Kenagh Smurf edged ahead in 47.33 but going last it was the 70cms leaders Mary O’Donoghue, Mitchelstown and Batty who flew round in 45.25 winning a great final.

More exciting action followed in the 80cms final. Eight ponies went through to the jump-off including the league leaders Harvey Trigg, Lismore on Goldie and it was another Lismore rider Cathy Toomey and Windhill Pepper who set a super time of 42.71. Aisling Murphy, Fermoy and Innishannon Polo always a threat in a final got some great turns in 42.19 but this time she had to settle for runner-up as Kate Mulcahy, Tallow and Rumples Stiltskin were determined to go home winners and this they did exactly in 39.85. Kate was then pipped at the post in the 90cms final when Hannah Rose, Midleton on Luka found 4 tenths of a second to take the winning trophy. Stephen Ahearne, Dungarvan was third here with Prince but was the unluckiest rider of the league when his other pony Ruby just rubbed the last in the fastest time. Aisling Murphy received the leaders trophy in this class.

After the summer break the Autumn Leagues at Ballyrafter will start in September and will feature the 1-00m WP Dillon Engineering €1,000 final plus competition for every level of rider so lots to look forward to.

SUMMER SHOWJUMPING

Despite a move indoors to avoid the torrential showers last week the summer league finals at The Ballyrafter Centre, Lismore had a proper fun atmosphere and the finals were again extremely competitive.

In horses Georgina O’Connor, Tallow had a super win in the 1-00m final. Eleven horses went through to the jump-off and with lots of clears it meant being daring would bring results. Anna Fee, Clonmel set a great time of 45.26 with Patricia Devereaux’s 4 year old Sandareeza then Rebecca Chow, Midleton and the lovely Clover Brigade bred mare Dancing Clover Breeze went a shorter and quicker route in 41.68. However Georgina O’Connor and her coloured gelding Splendid Knight who had been consistent throughout the league, flew everything in 41.01 to take a well earned victory. They had a fright though when league leaders Seamus Condon and Sceilig Phoebe took the most daring turn of all but paid the penalty of the fence down despite a super time.

Rebecca Chow had compensation when winning the 1-10m final just getting ahead of Anne Gould, Ballymacoda with Golden Keigh. Anna Fee filled third and fourth here with Clonmore Magic and Stanley Lux both owned by Pat Burke, Cahir and both by Lux Z. Earlier in the day John Reardon, Aghabullogue made his long journey from West Cork worth while when winning the 80cms final on his home bred Killeens Countess. Rachel Raher, Clonea went second here with the leading horse Clonea Silver Spirit and she was again runner-up in the 90cms final this time Anna Fee took the win on her own 4 year old thoroughbred Oscar’s Sky. Colin Hannan, Mallow had a convincing win in the 1-20m final.

The pony finals on Wednesday evening with eleven competitions meant there were not big entries, for any one final but they were all fought out against the clock. The 148cms 90cms final was a super competition. Seven ponies went against the clock but it was first drawn James Burke, Dungarvan with Jasber who set an impossible target of 40.50. Aoife Cusack, Carrick-on-Suir on Moneyboe Charlie was the league leader in both this 90cms and 1-00m leagues got closest in 47.65 with Megan Burke, Cahir on Patrick Gayson’s connemara Graigue Milly then a very close third in 47.73. Aoife was again just pipped at the post in the 1-00m final when this time flying home clear in 47.34 but Tommy Harty, Ring scored his best result in this 1-00m with Shannonbay Star on top form clear in 47.11 to take a narrow victory.

continued
Earlier in the evening Kate Houlihan, Lismore had a lovely double with Strawberry Blaze winning the 128 80cms and then in the 138 80cms final with her new pony Connie she won ahead of Sarah-Jane Hackett, Portlaw also on a new pony Master Scotch. For good measure Kate’s sister Hannah Houlihan won the 138cms 1-00m final on Loughville Ranger just ahead of Joanne McGrath, Curraglass who had to settle for second twice in the one evening with Glountane Beauty. The Harty’s had a great final when Jessica won the 128cms 90cms by the shortest margin. Mister S flying home for her in 42.84 after Gillian Burke, Dungarvan had another brilliant round on Midnight Whisper in 43.78. Tommy had a double win thanks to Dawn Dusty who took the 138cms 1-10m final again at the expense of Gillian Burke this time on Killineen Ferris. Jessie O’Flynn Hall, Ballynoe won the 148cms 1-10m with Ballyboy Rock ‘n Roll and Ali Flynn, Lismore took the 128cms 70cms on Monty’s Lane. Emma Walsh, Fermoy with Golden Ginger won the 138cms 90cms final ahead of Joanne McGrath.

The Panda League Finals take place this week and the next action will start at Ballyrafter in September with the Autumn Leagues.

THE BALLYRAFTER CENTRE, LISMORE
Spring League Finals

There was a fun atmosphere to the continued Spring League Finals at The Ballyrafter Centre, Lismore last weekend with another action packed feast of showjumping. Gillian Burke, Dungarvan had a fantastic double on Friday evening with her two greys Midnight Whisper & Killineen Ferris and Aine Cummins, Stradbally doubled up in The Clothes Horse Equestrian Store sponsored horse finals on Saturday on another grey Clonard Master Nibs.

The Clothes Horse 90cms final was the highlight of Saturday’s jumping with 11 horses going against the clock. One of the first to show form was Melody Williams, Mount Mellary and Foxhill Rambler who went clear in 50.07 then this was reduced to 47.56 by Sophie Walsh, Cahir and Ollie who went through to eventual third. Marie Walsh, Cappoquin and her Blackwater Puzzle have been knocking on the door for quite a while and they stormed round clear in 44.22 to take the lead but Aine Cummins, Stradbally and her connemara Clonard Master Nibs were in truly top form and clipped round in 41.75 to take the winners trophy and the top prizes provided by The Clothes Horse Equestrian Store near Waterford. Aine then won the 1-00m final for good measure and went home laden with two trophies a new rug, bridle and breastplate and a lovely set of Kantaur padded boots. Katie Callaghan, Ballyduff took the award for the leading horse in the 90cms with Bruno and James Noonan, Curraglass with Flagmount were leaders of the 1-00m league.

Earlier Lynda Twomey, Cork had a well deserved win in the 80cms final. She bred and produced her five year old mare Dance til Dawn and won from Maeve Hennessy, Midleton on Joan Vaughan’s Kippure Sabrina the 4 year old mare having just started jumping at the start of the year. Another young rider Alison Killilea from Cork finished third on Apples. Rachel Raher, Clonea had another superb spring league taking the leaders award in this class with Clonea Silver Spirit and she also took the title of overall leading rider of the league. Ally Barlow, Clonmel and Joey as leaders of the 70cms league were favourites for this final and they justified the title, winning by two seconds from Lynda Twomey who added some more to her tally for the day.

The Spring Friday League for ponies had superbly exciting finals and these young riders were surprisingly skilled against the clock. The 80cms final turned into a fiercely competitive competition with 12 finalists in the jump-off in determined mode right from the outset. Dean Hennessy, Fenor produced his two new young ponies in this league and he set a fine pace with the inexperienced Flash of 41.48. This held for quite a while before Kate Mulcahy, Tallow and Rumples Stiltskin flew round in 39.92 to take the lead then incredibly Joanne McGrath, Curraglass and Misty clocked the identical time of 39.92. Gillian Burke, Dungarvan and her top class working hunter pony Midnight Whisper showed their true versatility when she stormed through the start and never letting up on the momentum came home in the fantastic time of 36.85 and despite a real threat from Aisling Murphy, Fermoy held on to win. Aisling Murphy was the deserving leading rider of the league and with her double class leader Innishannon Polo she gave it everything but a slight hesitation rounding the last turn meant she stopped on 38.54 to take the runner-up spot leaving Kate and Joanne joint third.
(continued)
Gillian Burke then returned in another competitive final the 90cms with Killineen Ferris. Dean Hennessy was in form here again this time with Black Jack flying the flag before Sarah Barry, Castlelyons slotted in ahead of him with her new ride Galant Galaxy. In this final Joanne McGrath had Beauty and proving she was in top form she found plenty of options to jump clear in 47.29. Riders on form always raise the bar and Gillian with her lovely Killineen Ferris found one second from somewhere to claim the top spot once again in 46.25. Alison Barry, Sarah’s younger sister on her last ride with Evelyn Gillespie’s Mr Moss made it a winning one when taking the 70cms final in 43.46 from first draw with Ronan Walsh, Fermoy second on Princess Mia in 44.60. Emma McGrath, Cork and Ozzy took the league leaders award here.

The younger riders were in equally brilliant form and the 60cms final was another great competition with 7 in the jump-off. Mary O’Donoghue, Fermoy with Batty got round in 46.16 then Siomha Walsh, Cork on Judy flew the course in 45.33 before Phillip Keane, Conna with Willow took his fences on with pure gusto to stop the clock on 45.06 and take the winners trophy. Lauren O’Mahony, Midleton placed fourth with her league leader Cheeky. There were plenty new young riders in the 50cms final but their performances belied their experience. 8 went into the final round and the winner was found from an early draw. Michael Power, Dungarvan and Charlie made their first final a winning one when taking the top prize with Ali Flynn, Lismore the under 10 leading rider of the league a close second on the league leader Jelly Baby. James Dangerfield, Ballyduff had a great evening taking third on William with his younger sister Charlotte just behind in fourth on Apollo.

SPRING  SHOWJUMPING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010

The Spring League Championships at The Ballyrafter Centre, Lismore have run for over 30 years and continually produce truly great showjumping. The horse finals on Saturday were brilliant and Edel Kelly, Midleton had a superb double winning the lucrative Red Mills Championship and the Odon Equestrian Championship with her two chestnuts. Tadhg Beecher, Tallow (pictured)  also doubled up winning the Auto Cruz Challenge and the 1-30m final after a dramatic clock round, then Derry Kingston, Clonakilty repeated his superb performance of last year to again win the extremely competitive 1-20m final and John Brennan, (pictured)  Waterford took the first win of the day.

Sunday’s pony finals were packed with surprises and new records were made. Ian Fives, Cappoquin (pictured)  crowned a multitude of wins in the qualifying rounds with a multitude of wins in the finals! The magnificent five was his total plus the open leading rider title.

A full new set of fences provided a colourful spectacle and horses certainly rose to the occasion. 35 qualified horses contested the Red Mills 1-10m championship and 16 horses jumped at the top of their game to get through to contest the clock. 11 times National League Title holder Francis Connors who received a surprise presentation to mark his 11 titles and over 30 years competing at Ballyrafter set a quiet standard with the 5 year old roan Visual Effect in 52.88 which placed him fifth. Joanna Maher and the lovely Lissangle Royale Jade then slotted in ahead with 51.25 before Paul Beecher and Loughnatousa Rio set everything alight. Getting really smooth elastic turns they jumped a perfect round of 42.26 to take the lead and set a strong standard. Ian Cliffe on Finnisk Decies put in a brilliant effort but the clock showed 42.35 just one second off. Plenty drama followed before young rider Edel Kelly and Hunter’s Hero (pictured)  entered the arena. No stranger to winning on ponies Edel had her course judged perfectly and kept the momentum all the way to come home victorious in 41.72 being the first lady rider to win the Red Mills for many years. She had the perfect pay day when not only winning the top share of the €1,000 generously sponsored by Connolly’s Red Mills Horsefeeds but she also won the €500 Odon Equestrian 1-00m championship with Coolnacreena Forest and for extra good measure took second here on Hunter’s Hero. Janet Cunningham, Piltown placed third on her versatile palomino Sultan.

The Auto Cruz Challenge for 4 & 5 year old first season horses also has a bonus of €500 presented by Fran Mangan (pictured)

to the winner if they qualify for Dublin this year which has been won each year since its inception 3 years ago. This is a great omen for this years winners

Tadhg Beecher and the Crannagh Hero bred 5 year old Blakeney Crannagh. Francis Connors set 40.83 with Peg O’Connell’s Charlemagne and it looked a safe bet but then Paul Beecher and Loughnatousa Fleur got home in 40.52 but Tadhg enjoyed some really time saving turns on the grey to win in 39.06. John Brennan bred and produced his 90cms winner Santa Barbara B and Anna Fee with Cahir owner Billy Dillon’s Irish Draught stallion Knock Morris took runner-up spot. Eleven horses contested the jump-off of the thrilling 1-20m final. Francis Connors with Pamela Halley’s Calluna Cindy wasted no time whatsoever in making light work of the big track in 44.68 then remarkably Tadhg Beecher and Loughnatousa Capello moved up a gear and stopped on 41.56 looking assured of the win. However you cannot ever discount Derry Kingston who is tremendously fast and his partnership with Hasselbank is rock solid so defending their title of last year they stormed home winners once again in 39.29. Sean Kelly had His Lordship Cruise on song in the 1-30m final and got 43.23. Tadhg Beecher and Loughnatousa Lenord were turning to the last when another fence almost stopped them in their tracks but somehow everything stayed intact and Tadhg made it a double in 42.27.

Sunday’s pony finals had tough courses with Dublin qualifiers coming up this week but they produced fantastic jumping from these young riders. Ian Fives at just 12 years old had a magnificent league winning every week but he capped it on Sunday winning 5 finals a feat never achieved before in the 37 year history of The Ballyrafter Centre. Also remarkable was the Colligan Equestrian Centre sponsored leading rider awards all went to 128cms riders. Ian Fives took the Leading Open Rider title by a massive margin and Isabel Connors, Cappoquin at just 7 years old won the Leading Rider under 10 award. Sponsors John & Louise Moloney (pictured)  presented the Leading Novice Rider award to their youngest 7 year old Mark.

Ian Fives enjoyed a perfect start to the day winning the 128 70cms on John Flynn’s Monty’s Lane ahead of Ronan Walsh, Fermoy in his first registered final. Mark  Moloney took the first of his two Bucas leading pony awards in this class. Then the 128 90cms final was a tough competition. Patrick Queally, Dunmore East flew on Mill Road Butterfly in 34.70 but somewhere Ian Fives and Cahirbeg Princess found a second and won in 33.42. Dan O’Keeffe, Tallow and Starburst’s Joy had to settle for runner-up to Ian and Cahirbeg Princess in the 128 1-00m final with Bucas leaders Charlotte Connors, Cappoquin and Miss Elegant third. In the 138’s Ian has the veteran Pulp Panic back in the family after many years and he is happy to be home. In the 138 1-00m Liz Devine and Knockilla Melissa set a fast target of 34.27 but Ian got home to win in 34.01. Jack O’Keeffe, Tallow had a great day and placed second in the 138 1-10m with Mr Bond Ian Fives taking his fifth win in this final again on Pulp Panic. Jack O’Keeffe had real compensation though when winning the 148 1-20m final on Loughnatousa Ron getting ahead of Aimee Moloney on Gold Digger Douglas. Aimee’s turn in the winners enclosure though came in the 148 1-00m final when she and Diablo Bleu pipped Kelsi Walker, Dungarvan and C’Est La Vie Roxy. The 148 1-10m final was another thrilling contest. Jack O’Keeffe was second again as this time Molly O’Shea, Cork could not be caught on the ultra quick Borrismore Queen and Dan O’Keeffe won the Bucas Leading Pony award in this 148 1-10m with Loughnatousa Gold Touch.

Cabra Flyer lived up to her name as she has done so many times for the Ryan family when Killian Ryan, Thurles had a flyer taking truly brave lines to gain victory in the 128 80cms final. Tony O’Donohue, Tallow and Golden Girl got closest to take second. In fact all the Donohue boys Tony, Colm and Jack were placed in each final they contested. Hannah Houlihan, Lismore won the 138 80cms final with young Mark Moloney second (pictured)  on his Bucas leader Cec MoJo. His older brother Shane made it a special day for the family winning the 138 90cms final also on Cec MoJo with Liz O’Donnell, Cappoquin a close second on her new pony Abbeylara Lad. From Lismore Lorna Power did not have far to travel to win the 148 90cms final on board Rose Boy with Kelly Barry, Cork second on Claddagh Princess. The Bucas title was won by Lucy Mellerick, Killeagh and Sheer Mischief who were also third in this final.
