The League is named after the famous Irish bred horse Carling King who finished 4th at the Athens Olympics in 2004 as well as a host of international Grand Prix victories. Carling King has many connections to the Waterford & Tipperary area. He was purchased as a yearling by Finbar Harrington from Cappoquin who 2 years later sold the chestnut gelding to the Buckley family Ballyhane, Cappoquin, Co Waterford. He was ridden up to Grand Prix level by Michael Buckley who also jumped him at the World Breeders Championships in Lanaken. He was sold to the United States as a 7 year old where he went on to form a formidable partnership with Carrick on Suir born Kevin Babbington.
